The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official Scottish residence of the royal family and has been since the 1500s. The structures on the palace ground dated back even further, to the founding of Hollyrood Abbey in 1128. For one week early each summer, the current British monarch lives in the palace and carries out all necessary duties from there. The rest of the time, the palace is open to the public for touring and free exploration.
