The Mojave Desert covers about 48,000 square miles in the American Southwest, with arms in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. The boundaries of the desert can be generally determined by the presence of absence of Joshua trees, which grow in no other place on earth. Although there aren't many towns in the Mojave, it is home to the city of Las Vegas. It is also the location of Death Valley, one of the hottest and driest places on Earth.
