"Big Ben" is actually the name of the bell inside the clocktower located at the northern end of Westminster Palace. The tower itself is officially known as "Elizabeth Tower." It is one of England's most recognizable landmarks. Completed in 1858 and originally known simply as "Clock Tower," the tower housing Big Ben is the third-tallest freestanding clock tower and the largest four-faced clock on the planet. Where the nickname Big Ben comes from is the source of much debate.
