"Montreal" actually means "Mount Royal" in older French, and the famous city derives its name from the triple-peaked hill that sits in its midst. Mount Royale is not actually a mountain, although it is referred to as such by locals. Atop the hill is Mount Royal Park, which was inaugurated in 1876 and has been a Montreal landmark ever since. In fact, it is a Quebec Natural and Historical District, the only area in the province to be both.
