The Metropolitan Museum of Art is not just the largest art museum in the United States, but also one of the three biggest in the world. It's collection contains more than 2 million works of art, and it occupies a two million-square-foot building. The "Met," as it is colloquially known, was founded privately in 1870, and now sees more than 5 million visitors annually. It is a US National Historic Landmark, and an icon of New York City.
