Originally called Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in 1904 when the New York Times' offices moved to the area. Times Square is one of the world's most famous places, and the world's most visited tourist attraction, seeing more than 39 million people each year-- on average, 300,000 people pass through each day, and it is brightly lit even at night. Times Square stands adjacent to Broadway's famous theater district, and is one of the world's busiest intersections.
