Tubes created by lava flows thousands of years ago run from the rocky Hawaiian shore out into the ocean, and when the tide is right, waves force water out of the tubes with force powerful enough to jettison it up to thirty feet in the air. Despite its beauty, going too close to the blowhole can be dangerous, and tourists are strongly advised not to climb the fence into the area. Disregarding this advisory is very often fatal.
