On December 7, 1941, the United States was yanked into World War II when the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. More than one thousand soldiers were killed, and the USS Arizona marks the resting place of the vast majority of them. The memorial itself floats above the ship's wreckage, only reachable by boat. It was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1962 and sees more than one and a half million visitors every year.
