The Liberty Bell became the famous icon it is today because of a completely fictional story. Local legend had it that the bell was rung on July 4, 1776, in celebration of the completion of the Declaration of Independence. This was not true, but the story spread like wildfire, and soon the bell was being shipped all over the country to be viewed by thousands of fans. Its last journey was in 1915; it now stays in Philadelphia.
