Today, we will tour the Phoenix and Scottsdale area, visiting the Arizona State Capitol Building and Downtown Phoenix corridor. We will enjoy the beauty of Frank Lloyd Wright inspired architecture at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. Then we could have free time in Old Town Scottsdale, known for its art galleries, fashion shops, and restaurants.
Phoenix, AZ
This city in the Sonoran Desert of the American Southwest was founded in 1861. The Phoenix area is known as the "Valley of the Sun" for its sunny, subtropical desert climate. It has produced a slew of famous politicians.
Arizona Capitol Museum
Arizona Capitol Museum is made largely from materials indigenous to Arizona. The materials include malapai, granite and the copper dome. The design is optimal for the desert climate of Arizona. The building is topped with a weathervane similar to the Winged Victory of Samothrace which is seen visible through a skylight from within the rotunda.
Arizona Biltmore Hotel
The Arizona Biltmore Hotel is a resort located in Phoenix near 24th Street and Camelback Road. It is part of Hilton Hotels' Waldorf Astoria Hotels and Resorts and was also featured on the Travel Channel show Great Hotels. The Arizona Biltmore has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.
Scottsdale, AZ
This city just outside Phoenix is known for its nightlife. Scottsdale was described by the New York Times as "a desert version of Miami's South Beach" with "plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene."
Scottsdale Arts District
Internationally known as a mecca for art collectors, Scottsdale is home to more than 100 galleries. The Scottsdale Gallery Association was formed by professional art dealers to promote these fine art galleries and their weekly ArtWalks.
