Old Quebec was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 (some 300 years after its founding) for its historical significance and architectural impressiveness. The legendary French explorer Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec early in the 17th century, and today it is the only walled city north of Mexico in North America.
