Located in the northernmost part of Utah, the Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the fourth-largest terminal lake in the world. Its level of salinity is actually even higher than the ocean, ranging from 5% when the lake is high to as much as 27% when the water level is very low. The water level of the lake fluctuates wildly, creating and hiding islands and peninsulas in the basin.
