Travel to Lombard Street

Lombard Street is famous for being the most crooked street in the world, with eight hairpin turns in only a one-block stretch of road. This strange, winding path was actually necessary-- the steep grade (51%) of the hill Lombard Street climbs made it impossible for cars and even more so for wheelchairs to scale. Today, the road has a 5MPH speed limit and is one-way, only allowing traffic to pass down from Hyde Street to Leavenworth Street.
