The history of Toronto's main Chinatown is separated into two timelines-- that of First Chinatown and Old Chinatown. The original Chinatown area-- "First" Chinatown-- used to include what is now the Toronto City Hall. In 1961, a massive area of Chinatown was razed so the government buildings could be constructed. The remaining area is known as "Old" Chinatown. Street signs in Old Chinatown are displayed both in English as well as a phonetic Chinese translation.
