Venice's Grand Canal is the major canal in the city's expansive system. It takes an S-shaped path through the length of the city, and is used for public transportation as well as tourism; Gondola rides for visitors are popular. Additionally, water busses and private water taxis are available. The canal is lined with historic buildings dating back to as early as the 12th century AD. The canal's course was once an ancient river.
