The Jefferson Memorial was built in 1943 to honor Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and principal writer of the Declaration of Independance. The white stone building is neoclassical in style, modeled after famous Roman landmarks such as the Pantheon. It sits on the shores of the Potomac River, and is surrounded by a mass of Japanese cherry trees which were a gift from the people of Japan in 1912.
