In 1882, European guide Tom Wilson stumbled upon the lake as he was attempting to hunt down renegade horses. Amazed by the beauty of the water, he christened the lake with the name it is still known by today. The Emerald Lake gets its impressive color from powdered limestone that makes its way into the lake and is most pronounced in July when the lake is thawing. The lake is frozen between November and June each year.
